I think that the ego, although it sounds contradictory, is not something individual, it is a way of identifying ourselves in what we are and are not of a collective reality, we create a self from concepts and labels in society and we build ourselves from already established.

We get benefits from being what we think we are and form a protective shell that we usually believe is rigid and permanent. Sometimes we forget that just as our environment changes we can also shape ourselves, get out of our safety zone and take a temporary exile from the collective mind.
